Torsion and stiffness

Why a braced roof can still leave a building twisting

A roof path still needs places to deliver force. The layout of wall resistance matters to the whole response.

Compare a roof-braced model with resistance concentrated at the back sidewall, then with the end walls tied in. The changed layout provides additional paths; watch how the visible motion changes.

The concept behind the demonstration

A braced roof is one part of the lateral system. It does not by itself describe where the vertical resisting lines sit or how forces reach the supports.

Connecting end-wall bracing

Justice's preferred post 22B describes roof bracing throughout the model with vertical X-bracing initially concentrated on the back sidewall. Connecting end-wall bracing adds other paths, and the described twisting response changes.

a stiffer board

This version also explains that the model is clamped to a stiffer board than in an earlier hand comparison. Keep that setup difference visible rather than treating different recordings as a controlled measurement of real-building performance.

Keep the model in context

A qualitative physical-model comparison. Inputs are not calibrated or proven identical, and no full-size stiffness, earthquake performance, capacity or code compliance is established. This is not a prescription for bracing every bay.

Read the visual explanation

Authored viewing notes, not a spoken transcript.

Roof X-bracing is present. The first configuration concentrates vertical X-bracing on the back sidewall. Watch the relative motion in the side and overhead views.

The source labels the second setup TIED IN ENDWALLS. End-wall braces connect into the roof system. Compare the visible response while remembering that the input is not calibrated.

Bring it into the conversation

Pause. Compare. Explain.

Once force reaches the roof system, where can that configuration send it next?

Visible reduced twisting is not a numerical stiffness measurement or a universal bracing prescription.
