Torsion and stiffness

Bracing layout, stiffness and building twist

The same collection of frame lines can respond differently when resistance is connected in different locations.

This hand-push comparison changes the end-wall bracing configuration. Watch how the model twists as the route through the bracing system changes.

Authored explanation · separate from narration

The concept behind the demonstration

Bracing layout includes where resistance acts and how the system connects to it. Thinking only about the number of braces misses that spatial relationship.

global twisting

Justice's post compares whether the model's end-wall X-bracing is connected to the lateral system. He describes a change in global twisting as resistance is brought into the perimeter path.

the location of stiffness

Discuss the relationship between force transfer and the location of stiffness. The historical hook says “same push,” but the hand demonstration does not measure equal force, and its response is not a calibrated full-scale torsion assessment.

Keep the model in context

A qualitative model demonstration. The model base also moves, so this is not a measured full-size torsion test.

Pause. Compare. Explain.

Where is the model relying on resistance in each described configuration?

No numerical torsional-irregularity classification or equal hand-force claim is made.
